11:33 - CARD. BERTONE: “THE CHURCH DOES NOT WITHDRAW INTO ITSELF”
“The Church does not withdraw into itself, it does not keep the joy of the Gospel to itself, but proactively partakes of the tragedy of human suffering to turn, through Christ’s strength, the experience of suffering – of any suffering – into an event that is full of meaning and re-found hope”. This was said by card. Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, in the sermon during the Mass that he officiated today at the Catholic University of Lublin. According to the cardinal, “the fact Pope Benedict XVI’s first two encyclicals speak of love and hope is significant, as if it say that love is stronger than human destructivity”. “God’s solidarity with man enables us to overcome the pessimism of this age and build the future world with confidence”, stated the cardinal, who also mentioned Benedict XVI’s book on Jesus of Nazareth, in which the task of the Christian is summed up as a “non conformism with evil” through a “denunciation that opposes to the daze of the consciences”. Then, speaking more specifically of the role of the University of Lublin, which stands out for “its special relationship with the Pope”, Bertone defined it as “the ideal place to make its students experience God’s realism and confidence”. “The Church lives of the Eucharist”, the cardinal then exclaimed, quoting the words of John Paul II’s latest encyclical, his “spiritual will”.
