11:28 - CCEE: “THE FIRST PROCLAMATION” CONGRESS IN ROME FROM MAY 4

“The Christian community and the first proclamation” is the theme chosen for the eleventh European Congress of bishops and those responsible in the Bishops’ Conferences for catechesis in Europe to be held in Rome from May 4 to 7. Preparation for the meeting, promoted by the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE), has been coordinated by His Grace Mgr Vincent Nichols, Archbishop-elect of Westminster and CCEE’s Episcopal delegate for the ‘Catechesis, school and university’ Commission. “We decided to carry out a Europe-wide examination on an issue which is felt to be of particularly pressing importance” by “all the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe,” explains Mgr Walter Ruspi, Secretary of the catechesis department of CCEE’s Commission. The reflection of the 65 delegates from 27 countries will proceed through three approaches: theological, cultural and ecclesiological. Each of them will be introduced by an authoritative address by card. Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, by Fr Michael Paul Gallagher SJ (from the Pontifical Gregorian and Lateran Universities), and by Prof. Gianni Colzani (of the Pontifical Urbaniana University) respectively. Then time for discussion in the aula and in language groups on the role of parishes, the renewal of traditional structures, family and leisure. Some particularly significant experiences will highlight the riches of the local Christian communities in Europe.
