“We do not want our Moldavian brothers to feel in exile, abandoned. They must be certain that one day they will come home, that their country will be ready to welcome them.” Today, what Moldavia really needs is hope in the future and the Church can play an important role, for “when people say that we do not have anything, that we are poor, that there is no future for our country, the Church is called to give hope.” “What happened during the soviet regime must never occur again,” said the bishop. “The solution to our problems is not to be found in the use of strength, in fear, in intimidations.” No, we are rejecting all these things. Therefore, we are calling on everyone not to make use of these means.” All Moldova is asking is not to be left alone. “From a political and international point of view, we are asking that our government be respected for what it is, because it represents a nation,” added Mgr Cosa. “It may be weak, people may not like it, but behind this government there is a nation and, above all, there is a hope. We certainly have to be careful and realistic, but Moldavia must not be isolated and abandoned. Otherwise, the only road she is likely to take is the one she took in the past.”
